EFNY, Education en Français à New York – French Education in New York is a volunteer-run, not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting the French language in New York City public schools.
EFNY was founded by francophone parents motivated to support NYC students attending American schools in their endeavor either to acquire or to preserve and strengthen French as an academic language.
EFNY achieves its goal by offering enrichment classes and by supporting the creation of dual language programs in NYC public schools.
Class Descriptions
French for Native Speakers
Petits Francophones (K & 1st grade) – This class is open to bilingual students. In this class, all activities are conducted in French. It aims to develop a rich oral language, organized and understandable by others. The child speaks and is understood through the language. He learns to be attentive to messages addressed to him, to understand and respond appropriately. The child starts the basic acquisition of the alphabet, the sounds and will be introduced to reading and writing in French.
Moyens Francophones (2nd & 3rd grade) – This class is open to bilingual students who are already reading in English and will be reading and writing in French. In this class, all activities are conducted in French. The child develops the basic acquisition in reading, writing as well as grammar skills. The student will be taught to better differentiate English to French and to understand the basic grammar rules.
Grands Francophones (4th & 5th grade) – This class is open to students who are truly fluent in French, and focuses on verbal and written expression, grammar and spelling. In this class, all activities are conducted in French. The children read longer texts and consolidate their bases in grammar, spelling, conjugation and vocabulary. Emphasis is placed on written expression: namely write short varied texts (dialogue, fiction, description, portrait). Children are encouraged to read independently.
Découverte du monde (K & 1st grade) – This class is open to students fluent in French. Students will explore the world around them, situate themselves in time (calendar, cycles, timeline…) and space (their school, neighborhood, city, the nature around them, but also the solar system), and discover cultural aspects of ‘Francophonie’.
Le français par le théâtre (2nd to 5th grade) – Students will learn how to express themselves in public in French. This class is perfect for students who need to improve their verbal expression. Students fluent or advanced in French language are welcome. Language skills will be studied during this class. Culminating event open to parents at the end of the season
French as Second Language
K & 1st grade – beginners – This class is an introduction to verbal communication and is adapted to the comprehension skills of young learners. The goal is to bring the children to express simple phrases in basic social situations through various activities: stories, creative projects, songs and games.
2nd & 5th grade – intermediate – This is an intermediate class for students with basic verbal and comprehension skills of the French language. The children continue building their verbal and comprehension skills and expand their vocabulary through varied and playful activities.
The EFNY program follows a French-only policy in all Francophone classes. Please help us with this by encouraging your child to follow these rules.
